Top Tips for Reality TV Makeup:
1. Flawless Foundation
Reality TV often involves close-ups, so a flawless base is crucial. Opt for a long-wearing, high-definition foundation that provides full coverage without looking cakey. I love Graftobian Glamour Cream Foundation Palettes (warm is a must have) for its HD demi-matte formula. Blend well, and pay attention to what your talent is wearing - if there chest and shoulders are showing continue the makeup down.
2. Highlight and Contour Like a Pro
To ensure your clients look their best under harsh studio lighting, mastering highlight and contour techniques is essential. Use cream products for a more natural look and set lightly with powder for longevity. Focus on enhancing the face's natural structure while avoiding overly harsh lines. I would recommend using the lighter and deeper foundation shades from the Graftobian Foundation palette I mentioned above, super convenient to have everything in one palette.
3. Camera-Ready Eyes
Eyes are the focal point of many looks. Choose eyeshadows that complement the client's skin tone and eye color. Use matte shades for definition and shimmer shades sparingly to avoid flashback. I like having a good neutral mattes palette on hand like the Makeup by Mario Master Mattes palette. Waterproof eyeliner and mascara are must-haves to prevent smudging during long shoots.
4. Perfected Brows
Well-groomed brows frame the face and are critical for on-camera presence. Fill in sparse areas with a pencil or powder that matches the hair color, and set with a clear or tinted brow gel to keep hairs in place. Avoid overly dark or heavy brows as they'll appear harsh on camera. I've recently been loving the Kosas Brow Pop Pencil - it has an amazing micro angled shape that makes it easy to fill in and draw hairlike strokes.
5. Long-Lasting Lips
Choose long-wearing lipsticks in shades that complement the overall look. Matte formulas tend to last longer on camera. Don't forget to line the lips with a matching lip liner to prevent feathering and ensure precision. My favorite affordable lip pencils are the Slim Lip Pencils from NYX they have so many great shades.
6. Set It and Forget It
Setting spray is your best friend for reality TV makeup. After completing the look, spritz a setting spray to lock everything in place and reduce shine. This step ensures makeup stays put through hours of shooting and various lighting conditions. I love a beauty setting spray like the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Setting Spray paired with a high performance waterproof formula like Kryolan Fixing Spray.
7. Touch-Up Essentials
Always be prepared for touch-ups. Keep blotting papers, mattifying primer, a compact powder, and the lip color used within arm’s reach to maintain the look throughout the day. Quick touch-ups ensure the client always looks fresh and camera-ready. I'm a big fan of the RCMA Pressed Powders in my touch up kit.
